The following grief counseling and support groups are available in our region. These organizations offer help to people who have experienced loss through death.
  • Carilion Center for Grief and Healing

    The Burden Boat

    The Burden Boat is an interactive work of art designed to help people release their burdens. The sculpture is on display in the atrium area of the lobby at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and the public is invited to write down their burdens and place them in the boat.

    Camp Treehouse

    Camp Treehouse is a free day-camp for children and teens, ages 6 to 18, that have lost a loved one. The camp provides a caring, safe environment where youth can explore their feelings and concerns. Look for upcoming camps listed here later this year.

    Camp Braveheart (age 8-17)

    Every June, Camp Braveheart brings together grieving children and teens from across the country to address their unique emotional and spiritual needs. Since the Christ-centered and nationally recognized camp was founded over a decade ago, Gentle Shepherd has financially supported the program and sponsored scholarships.     Good Samaritan offers individual grief support to patients' families as well as any members of the community experiencing the loss of a family member or loved one.

    The Oakey Collection at Roanoke Public Libraries

    Resources for bereaved families and bereavement caregivers dealing with end-of-life issues. The collection, in memory of Samuel G. Oakey, II, includes materials for children and adults in both English and Spanish.
