Lawrence “Larry” Rehfield, 87, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Monday, August 5, 2013. Preceding him in death were his first wife, June A. Rehfield, his parents, Samuel M. and Dora Kallmann Rehfield, and two brothers, John Rehfield and Julius Rehfield.

He leaves behind to cherish him memory, his loving wife of almost 30 years, Shirley; three children, Dr. Patricia Rehfield, of Vallejo, CA, Eugene Rehfield, of Juneau, Alaska, and Dr. Amy Rehfield (Dr. John Dugan), of Asheville, NC; a step-daughter, Katherine Bryant, of Roanoke; a dear step-daughter-in-law, Monica Poole, of Australia; sister-in-law, Estelle Rehfield, of E. Norwich, NY; 11 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and 2 step-great-grandchildren.

Larry served in the United States Army during World War II. He was attached to the 89th Infantry Division as a German translator. He entered combat against the Nazi Army in Germany, following the conclusion of the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. He participated in the crossing of the Rhine River, while under Nazi artillery cannon fire and was awarded the Bronze Star medal and Combat Infantry Badge for the action against enemy forces.
After the War, Larry obtained a degree in Civil Engineering from the City College of New York in 1950. He was employed by the firm of Levitt and Sons, builders of Levittown communities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland.

Graveside services will be held at Old Dominion Memorial Gardens, 7271 Cloverdale Road, Roanoke, at 11 A.M. on Wednesday, August 7, 2013, with Rabbi Kathy Cohen officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the Social Hall of Temple Emanuel, 1163 Persinger Road.

The family wishes to thank their many generous neighbors and friends for their acts of kindness over the past couple of weeks. They also wish to acknowledge the tender care he received from the physicians and nurses at Lewis-Gale Medical Center and Raleigh Court Healthcare.
