Thomas Eugene Usher
February 17, 1925 - January 9, 2012
Thomas Eugene Usher, 86, of Roanoke, VA, passed away Monday, January 9, 2012. Tom was born in Denver, CO, on February 17, 1925, to the late James Jay Usher and Louise Hurd Usher. Preceding him in death were his sister, Leora Usher Felkner, and her husband, Barney Felkner. Tom graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with Bachelor and Masters degrees in Electrical Engineering and was an instructor in the electrical engineering department at University of Colorado before joining General Electric Company in Schenectady, NY. He transferred to Roanoke, Virginia, with his family in 1974 where Tom worked in steel mill engineering until his retirement in 1987. He was a valued employee at GE for 38 years. He was the holder of many patents as well as being a licensed Professional Engineer. He served in the Navy in World War II as an officer on a mine sweeper based in Hawaii. Tom enjoyed tennis, bridge, crossword puzzles, woodworking, reading, the Redskins, and the outdoors, as well as playing cards and games with his family. He was an independent, quiet person with a great love for his family. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Lane Usher, whom he met at the University of Colorado, children Nancy and John Goodrich of St. Johnsbury, VT, Jim and Jennifer Usher of Topsfield, MA, and Sue Henderson Kostrova of Lindenhurst, IL. His grandchildren are Kelly and Dr. Chris Merrell of Charleston, SC, Jennifer and Kenneth Kilduff of Hingham, MA, Sarah and Mike Alto, of Lisbon, ME, Katy and Todd Smith of St. Johnsbury, VT, Andrew Goodrich of Glendale, CA, Dylan and Graham Henderson of Roanoke, VA, and Nicole and Colby Hamilton of Topsfield, MA. His beloved great grand children are Zachary, Paxton and Ryder Smith of St. Johnsbury, VT, as well as Lillian and Eleanor Merrell of Charleston, SC. A special thank you is extended to his caregivers at Lewis Gale Medical Center, 6 West, Dr. Vashist Nobbee, Dr. Mark Currie, and Dr. Nelson Greene. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society in his memory at 37238 Franklin Rd, Roanoke, VA 24014. The family will be receiving friends at Oakeys South Chapel from 5 PM to 8 PM on Friday, January 13, 2012.
